Extra Staples is a series of posts where I share various links I find interesting. It is not on any regular schedule, and the links can be old or new.
Stationery-related
Count Anton Wolfgang von Faber-Castell passed away a few days ago. Yes, he was the leader of the wood-cased pencil company Faber-Castell. This news prompted me to read more into the history of pencils and about Faber Castell as a company. I’m still a n00b, so there may be better articles out there, but I found this one from 2012 an interesting read, especially the last part:
60 Seconds With: Count von Faber-Castell - WSJ
And Sean’s story of his meeting with the Count himself:

Pilot’s Reply Regarding Pricing in the UK | Pens! Paper! Pencils!
There’s an interesting ongoing discussion on Pilot’s pricing and product availability in the UK, bravely initiated by Ian. It’s been very informative, not just about Pilot in the UK but Europe in general and the US.
The Pen Addict #189: OG Colorer - Relay FM
I really enjoyed this episode with June Thomas and her guide to stationery shopping in NYC. Great tips, and I could really relate to her passion for notebooks! She mentions Delfonics Rollbahn and Paperways!
NYC Stationery Attractions – Owl Ink
Speaking of NYC, Elaine shares her recent stationery adventure in the Big Apple, with beautiful pictures. Oh, those Owl Ink pencils! (◉v◉)
Field Notes Chicago Edition
Last week, Field Notes released an interesting kraft edition with the Chicago city flag design. As someone who grew up in Chicagoland, this was a must-buy for me. My order should be arriving today or so. Was this a must-buy for you? Word on the street is that you get one Chicago memo book free if you do a local pick-up, and they stamp the date you visited on the back cover. Neat-o.
Mondo X Field Notes "Dead Print" Memo Books (Sold out! But awesome pictures!)
Well, that ship has sailed. Were you able to purchase this edition? I didn’t know it’d be listed online, so I missed it. I heard it sold out almost instantaneously though. Pictures look amazing but I’m not losing sleep over it and will not be rushing to eBay for it. I’ll leave it up to a happy chance in the future.
Retro Talk: Crosswords and Space Pens | Pens and Junk
I’ve been really into crossword puzzles for last two months or so, and I didn’t know there was an effective way to solve puzzles with a pen. Maybe someday I’ll be confident enough to take the leap!

Masking tape Multi Japanese2 Taiyaki /masté - masté (Washi tape) – online MARK'S
Did you know you can buy Mark’s Masté washi tapes directly from them online? (Masté is one of the bigger washi tape brands, along with Kamoi mt). Game changer, if it weren’t for international shipping fees.. But I’m such a sucker for tapes with snack designs, like this taiyaki one. Well, good for Mark's for making their stuff available online directly to international admirers, and for including the latest designs. Maybe the washi tape craze has become too big for them to ignore. I’d like to see a discussion on the washi tape pricing and availability outside of Japan! :)
